Chantrelle Galore

October 20, 2009

Hervé picked a ton this weekend. If you like mushrooms, these are fantastic! Let me know if you want any. So good in risotto or salads.

CLEAN for 4 days

October 16, 2009

Alright, I’ve been clean for 4 days so far and it hasn’t been that hard, thanks to the Blossoming Lotus and Whole Foods for lunch.  Preparing food the night before for lunch is just not my thing . . . heck, I rarely prepare food for dinner, so if I’m going to make salmon, I’m eating it right then.  I’ve been sick for the majority of this week, so it’s been hard to tell if there’s a difference in how I feel.  Being sick through this has  pros and cons.  On one hand, I haven’t been tempted to go out at all, wine hasn’t sounded good and I’ve felt like drinking tea, over coffee.  On the other hand, I want to make myself feel better and it’s been all I can do to stay away from the chips and salsa.

For those of you nearing the end of your cleanse, have you started to see the benefits?  Have you been able to stick with it?  I’m getting sick of juice and I’m tempted to do this for just one week, but if you all look and feel 10 years younger, maybe I’ll be motivated to keep going!

Vegan Baking Classes

October 14, 2009

PCC rocks. You can take a class on virtually ANYTHING! I see there are several baking classes offered at Sweetpea Bakery, which makes killer vegan desserts.

I’m taking a few of the wine courses, if you have any interest in these, definitely let me know.

Check out the offerings in the PCC catalog.

Also, I am going to plan a bake-off for mid-november, start thinking about what you’ll want to bring so we don’t duplicate efforts. Yummy!

Okay, I am on my 5th day of CLEAN, so far so good. BUT, I am baffled by the crazy intense dreams I am having! Not going to lie, its been a while since I have gone to sleep several nights in a row with no alcohol in my system, so maybe this is it? I am chalking it up to the fact that my body has a bunch of kinetic energy left over from not digesting.

Naturopath Endorsement

October 7, 2009

Hey All,

Kelly posted this as a comment, but I wanted to make it more visible cause this Carmen woman sounds pretty great.

Read below…

About a month ago I was experiencing some fatigue and also dealing with some minor skin irritations that my dermatologist couldn’t diagnose (much less tell me what was causing it). I called a naturopath who was recommended to me and can I say, I am changed forever. It was like being in therapy — for the body! I spent 90 minutes talking with her about food, history, lifestyle and goals. She was not only able to diagnose my symptoms but has cured me of them through a couple of additional vitamin supplements. I wanted to recommend her to any of you who may be looking for a Naturopathic doctor — her name is Carmen Ripley (503-445-7767). Love her!

apple + ginger + anything = tasty

October 7, 2009

Day 3 of Clean and can safely say that I couldn’t do this without a juicer. Props to my friend Austin who’s move precipitated his Revel finding a temporary home on the counter of my tiny West Village apartment. I think the larger your kitchen, the more Clean you can be. Compost? Not in this crib baby.

This morning I’m starting with a apple, carrot, spinach, kale and ginger juice and it’s great. I was making it while on the phone with my mom who promptly declared it “gross.” Detox is not a very midwestern pursuit. I would be interested to hear everyone’s experience telling people that you’re doing Clean. It wasn’t a huge issue at bowling last night but when asked, I found it hard to give a succinct explanation.

In one line, can you tell me, why Clean?

Detox Day 2

October 6, 2009

After almost six months of aggressive toxing, I’ve started Clean. I think the day after my birthday was a fitting place to begin. While Junger advises an “elimination” phase before diving headlong into the full program, I dove.

Last night at Improv I was dragging. Less from food withdrawal than residual exhaustion from weeks on the go. Today I’ve had a bit of a headache but am just “feeling it” as advised.

I guess the hardest part has been giving up gum. I’m a bit of an addict, I will admit, and feel weak that I crave it after meals. If they have Nicorette for smoking, what do you use for the Chiclets? Has anyone else had a similar problem? What did you do?

Almost Clean!

October 6, 2009

Hello ladies! As I enter my final week of Clean, I thought I should finally post about it. I’m not going to lie, after two weeks, I was officially over it. While it is no longer difficult to eat in this way, it is more the delicious ecstasy of biting into food that you can’t wait to eat that I dearly miss (I’m Italian, I love food, sorry!). I’ve decided the only way I can get through week three and the food cravings is to ramp up my yoga practice and detox all the negative feelings out of me.

I already practice Ashtanga yoga twice a week with Near East Yoga, but had a yoga date with my massage therapist (the FAB Gina Hoffmann at Hawthorne Chiro!) at The Bhaktishop to try something new. Girls, it was AWESOME and exactly what I needed to reset my mind on the goal. The classes are fun and unique and the beautiful singing and chanting will resonate in your soul long after class. If you haven’t tried it yet, this place is a must in combo with Clean and a much needed jolt if the juicing gets you down. Gina was kind enough to give me the Intro Unlimited Week as a gift, so I will be there all week trying out classes. If any of you Portland ladies are interested in joining me, let me know, I have one free pass!

Christmas Came Early!

October 6, 2009

Herve and I swung by Abby’s Table to drop off some nectar and she was very excited by her latest acquisition-an industrial size VitaMix. Needless to say, we will be tasting something fabulous out of this very soon!

Also, 3 of us BeWellers are on CLEAN right  now. Those of you who have done it, please chime in with words of wisdom. So far so good for Tristan, Amanda and I!
